Buy rum online

Are you thinking about buying rum online but don't really know much about this versatile spirit? Welcome to the following article, in which we have summarized the most important facts and quality characteristics of the different types of rum.

When you think of rum, do you immediately think of palm trees and white beaches under a glorious sun? Jamaica and Cuba are indeed the countries with the longest rum tradition - but high-quality rums don't just come from the Caribbean. Lovers who regularly buy their rum online from us appreciate our wide range. After this short read, you'll definitely be a little bit smarter and will be even better placed to enjoy the rum on offer in our store.

What exactly is rum and how is it made?

Rum is a spirit that is usually made from sugar cane molasses - but in some countries or distilleries it is also made from sugar cane juice. First, a so-called mash is produced from the molasses (sugar cane juice), chopped sugar cane and water, which is fermented with yeast cultures to produce alcohol. The end product of fermentation only has an alcohol content of 4 to 5 percent. Only subsequent distillation increases this value to up to 75 percent. Diluted with water, you get white rum. Brown rum, which you can also buy online, gets its color from being stored in wooden barrels, which give it a characteristic flavor depending on the type and previous use.

Not only the type of barrel is important for the flavor of high-quality rum, but also the place where the rum rests during storage - especially with regard to the ambient temperature. The Caribbean, South America, the Philippines and the Indian islands provide excellent conditions.

Here is our first recommendation for you if you want to buy rum online: Brown rum tastes more aromatic and often has a sweetish note. White rum, on the other hand, is excellent for cocktails and long drinks. The alcohol content of rum is between 40 vol. and 55 vol. 43 vol. is quite common.

What do "solera rum", "blended rum" and co. mean?

As with other spirits, sparkling wine, wine and beer, the individual types of rum differ considerably in taste depending on their origin and storage. To help you buy the rum online that suits you best, here is an explanation of some important terms. Technical vocabulary only ever seems foreign if you have never dealt with the terms before.

White rum and brown rum

The main difference between white rum and brown rum is that white rum is not stored in oak barrels after distillation, but rests at most briefly in stainless steel tanks. Brown rum gets its color and aroma from the wood of the barrels in which bourbon whiskey or similar has previously been stored, for example.

Blended rum

Blended rums are rums that are blended from different barrels of different ages in a distillery. This ensures that the taste is always consistent.

Solera rum

The solera system is a rum ageing technique in which the barrels are stacked in rows. The rum is always bottled from the bottom row, which is then refilled with the rum from the row above. This allows the rum to mature evenly over many years. If you are looking for high-quality rum from well-known brands, you will find this information with Ron Zacapa (Zacapa 23), Ron Esclavo or Matusalem, for example.

Rhum Agricole

Rhum Agricole usually comes from the French overseas departments of Guadelupe, Martinique and La Réunion and is distilled exclusively from sugar cane juice. If you want to buy this type of rum online, pay attention to how old it is: VO means at least three years, VSOP at least four, XO at least six

Overproof rum

If you want to buy rum online with which you can conjure up very full-bodied cocktails, then overproof rum can be an option: it has an alcohol content of at least 57.15 percent and is therefore particularly suitable for mixing.

Rum blend

Rum blend contains only five percent "real" rum. The remaining alcohol comes from other neutral alcohol sources. This type of rum usually has 37.5% alcohol by volume.

Rum for beginners

If you are new to rum and want to buy rum online for the first time, it is best to start with a "friendly" drop. The dark varieties gain a pleasant sweetness as they mature, without this becoming overpowering. In addition to our non-mainstream range, you can of course also help yourself to the well-known, established brands to get a feel for this delicious spirit. Of course, the more mainstream it is, the more it meets the "general taste".

The Botucal Reserva Exclusiva from Venezuela, Don Papa Rum from the Philippine island of Negros and the Atlantico Gran Reserva are renowned representatives of this characteristic vanilla, chocolate and caramel note. Barbados rum accentuates the velvety sweetness with a strong dash of fruity spice. More suitable for connoisseurs is Plantation Rum, which first matures in the humid climate of the Caribbean and then in France. Plantation 3 Stars White, for example, is a white rum with an almost unbelievable bouquet of floral, fruity and spicy aromas.

How do you drink rum?

As a rule of thumb - with all the exceptions that such a generalization entails: white rum that has been aged for a short time is ideal for cocktails with the typical Caribbean flair. Dark rum that has been aged for years, on the other hand, should be given the opportunity to prove its qualities undiluted and unadulterated. Once you have decided to buy good brown rum online, enjoy it neat. However, depending on the strength, you can add a few drops (!) of water so that the complex aromas held by the alcohol can develop better. The ideal drinking temperature for brown rum is 16 to 19 degrees.

Buy rum online: Which rum for which cocktails?

As already mentioned, white rum is preferred for cocktails and long drinks. A classic that is currently experiencing a sparkling renaissance is the mojito. This favorite gets the right flair with a Caribbean white rum, which has its own fruity and spicy aroma. The same applies to the daiquiri and the somewhat less well-known, very alcoholic Long Island Iced Tea. Although brown rum is actually far too good for cocktails, there is one exception that can lay claim to quasi-traditional honor: the Planter's Punch was invented back in the 17th century.
