Mulled wine - the companion for the cold season

Mulled wine is a hot, spiced wine that is particularly popular at Christmas time. It spreads a seductive aroma and provides cozy warmth on cold days. Its tradition goes back a long way and has developed steadily over the centuries.

The origins of mulled wine

The history of mulled wine can be traced back to ancient Rome, where spiced wine was known as "Conditum Paradoxum". In the Middle Ages, this tradition was continued in Europe and mulled wine was particularly appreciated during the cold winter months.

Ingredients and preparation

The basis for mulled wine is red wine, which is refined with a mixture of spices such as cinnamon, cloves, star anise and oranges. Sometimes sugar or honey is also added to enhance the sweetness. The wine is heated slowly to release the aromas of the spices, but without boiling to preserve the alcohol content.

A dash of rum or amaretto can also be added to the mulled wine to give it a special touch. The choice of red wine also plays a major role: a strong, full-bodied red wine provides a more intense flavor, while a lighter wine leaves more room for the spices.

When heating the mulled wine, it is important to only heat it to just before the boiling point. This preserves the aromas and prevents the alcohol from evaporating. After heating, the mulled wine should infuse for around 20 minutes to allow the spices to fully develop.

Recipe for classic mulled wine

  • 1 liter of red wine
  • 1 orange, cut into slices
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 cloves
  • 2 star anise
  • 3-4 tablespoons sugar or honey

Place all the ingredients in a pan and heat slowly. Do not bring to the boil. Leave to infuse for about 20 minutes, then serve hot.

Variations of the mulled wine

There are many variations of mulled wine, depending on the region and personal taste. White mulled wine, which is made with white wine, is a refreshing alternative. Fruit mulled wine, which is mixed with additional fruit juices such as apple or cherry juice, is also very popular.

Exotic spices such as cardamom, ginger or vanilla pods can also be used for a special touch. These give the mulled wine an additional flavor dimension and make it a unique experience.

Another trend is "mulled beer", in which beer is used instead of wine. This variant is particularly popular in Belgium and the Netherlands and offers an interesting alternative to classic mulled wine.

Alcohol-free versions are also possible by using grape juice or apple juice instead of wine. These versions are particularly suitable for children and anyone who does not want to drink alcohol.

Mulled wine and Christmas markets

Mulled wine is an integral part of Christmas markets in Germany and other European countries. The cozy atmosphere that emanates from the stands with steaming pots of mulled wine is simply part of the pre-Christmas season for many. Enjoying a hot mulled wine in convivial company is a highlight of the cold season.
