What are fruit brandies and fruit schnapps?

Obstler and fruit schnapps are brandies distilled from fermented fruit. Typical fruits are apples, pears, plums, cherries and mirabelle plums. While "Obstler" is often used as a generic term for all types of fruit brandy, "Obstschnaps" refers more specifically to the brandies made from individual types of fruit.

The history of fruit brandies

The art of making fruit brandy has a long tradition in Central Europe. As early as the Middle Ages, fruit was distilled in monasteries and on farms to produce long-lasting, high-proof drinks. Over the centuries, techniques have been refined and fruit brandies have become an important part of regional culture and cuisine.

Regional specialties of fruit brandy

In Germany, the Black Forest, Allgäu and Franconia regions in particular are known for their high-quality fruit brandies. Austrian fruit brandies, particularly from Styria and Burgenland, also enjoy an excellent reputation. Switzerland also produces first-class products with its cherry brandies from Zug and Basel.

The production of fruit brandy and fruit schnapps

Production begins with the selection and harvesting of ripe fruit. These are crushed and fermented, converting sugar into alcohol. The resulting fruit wine is then distilled in copper stills. The art lies in the right temperature and timing to extract the aromas of the fruit optimally. After distillation, many fruit brandies are matured in glass or stainless steel containers to harmonize their taste.

Maturation and storage

Some high-quality fruit brandies are stored in wooden barrels, which gives them additional aromas and a golden color. This ageing process can take several years and results in particularly fine and complex brandies. Fruit brandies that are not matured in wooden barrels often retain their clear color and pure fruit flavor.

Fruit brandies and fruit schnapps are traditionally served as a digestif after a meal to aid digestion. Of course, you have to decide for yourself whether this is really the case or not.
