Lemonade - perhaps the best refreshment in the world

When you think of lemonade, you somehow still think of the homemade drink in your own kitchen, where you put lemon and sugar in water and stir vigorously until the sugar is dissolved. Or when you think of lemonade, you think of the little stands of kids who want to supplement their pocket money with homemade lemonade. This lemonade is, of course, the most classic form of soda ever.

However, for the past ten to twenty years, the number of sodas on the beverage shelves that we get to enjoy has been on the rise. Good thing! In fact, it wasn't that long ago that our shelves were merely filled with Coke, Fanta, Sprite and apple spritzer - not to mention hundreds of different juices. But our thirst for variety and non-alcoholic variety has spawned many new sodas and organic sodas. This development is still so new that there is hardly any online lemonade store yet. With our marketplace we have changed that. With us you can buy lemonades online that you would hardly find in any other store or store.

Lemonade has long since become something for adults as well. Sometimes water is not enough as a thirst quencher or it just doesn't satisfy enough. Then you need a drink with a sweet, fruity taste and sparkling carbon dioxide. This combination makes drinking more exciting. Just think of sparkling wine and champagne (the "adult beverage" par excellence). Exactly the same game: fruity, sweet, sparkling.

But sodas are an adult beverage anyway when you think of long drinks. Lemonade, after all, is used in many long drinks - or as a filler in cocktails. The most famous lemonade for alcoholic drinks in recent years is without a doubt tonic water. Tonic belongs to the group of bitter lemonades. Just like bitter lemon, bitter grapefruit or bitter orange. Tonic water is indispensable for our beloved gin.

Apart from its own bitter taste due to the fruit used, most bitter lemonades have added bitter substances such as quinine. Tonic water has by far the highest proportion of quinine. In most cases, bitter lemon and bitter orange contain only about a third of the quinine content of tonic water. By the way, the whole thing is measured in milligrams per liter.

The best-known and most popular long drinks include Gin Tonic, Cuba Libre and Vodka Lemon. Tonic, cola and bitter lemon all taste quite different, but are based on the same structure in terms of taste.

What is lemonade?

Lemonade is a non-alcoholic beverage made from water, sugar and fruit juice. Originally, lemonade probably consisted only of water and lemon juice, even without sugar. Nowadays, sugar is an integral part of any lemonade and thus the definition of a soda. In fact, it is precisely this combo that makes sodas so delicious: the acidity of the lemon juice and the sweetness of the sugar together make for a delicious, refreshing drink.

Originally, sodas were actually all lemonade (just think how old Sprite is). Now, the fruit juice from various citrus fruits is used to get the typical tartness. Besides lemon, this can be lime, orange, grapefruit, blood orange or even rhubarb. You can even use fruit vinegar, because vinegar has a very high acidity. With homemade lemonade, you can live freely and try it out.

Lemonade has only become popular in the last 100 years or so as we've gotten more access to tropical fruits like lemons and other citrus fruits. As we know it from the movies, lemonade is a popular drink, especially in the USA, to refresh yourself in the hot summer.

Nowadays, soda falls under just about any non-alcoholic beverage. And that's even if the soda is red, purple, green or transparent. In the supermarket, you don't really think of lemon with water and sugar anymore when the word "lemonade" comes up. But that's also good and right. Since people don't always feel like saying "soft drink," I think we've all tacitly agreed to call non-alcoholic sweet beverages with a fruity component lemonade.

Adding to this definition of lemonade is the fact that we always drink sodas cold and that, in most cases, they contain carbonation. These are precisely the factors that make sodas a refreshing taste experience: sweet, fruity, cold and fizzy.

These days, however, we have stretched lemonade to the point where we also refer to herbal lemonades as sodas. These herbal sodas may not even have citrus in their recipe, but they still pass for soda. Some even wonder that cola itself is also a soda. What is also becoming more and more popular are sugar-free sodas. Sugar actually "belongs" in a lemonade, but of course there is a trend towards drinks without sugar. The fact that there are more and more alternatives naturally pleases everyone who wants to eat and drink less sugar.

Homemade lemonade

To be completely honest, you don't necessarily have to buy lemonade. You can make incredibly delicious lemonade yourself. Making your own lemonade is really easy as pie in itself. It's far more difficult to brew your own craft beer, make a delicious liqueur, or roast good coffee at home on your own.

With a few tricks and basic rules, you can make the perfect homemade lemonade at home. All you need for homemade lemonade is sparkling water, sugar syrup or sugar and fresh fruit.

Ingredients for your own lemonade:

1. water: the easiest is to buy mineral water. Preferably the fizziest water you know. Alternatively, of course, you can make the sparkling water yourself if you have the proper equipment for it at home.

Why carbonated mineral water: Carbonic acid causes the pleasant tingling sensation on our tongue, which in turn we perceive as refreshing and sparkling.

2. sugar or sugar syrup: For sweetness, you can make it especially easy by simply buying sugar syrup at the store. However, if you want more of your own in your homemade lemonade, sugar syrup is extremely easy to make yourself. To do this, you simply need to boil sugar in a pot of water. Preferably in a ratio of 1 to 1. Then the result will not be too sweet.

Why sugar in lemonade: Like many animals, we love the taste of "sweet". And not just since the advent of industrially processed sweets. We humans have loved sweet since time immemorial - back then as fructose in the form of sweet fruits. Our lemonade should not only have a sweet touch (according to taste), the sweetness also forms the perfect counterbalance to the acidity of the citrus fruit and results in a balanced, sparkling lemonade.

3. citrus: For acidity, the juice of citrus fruits is best. These can be lemons and limes, but also oranges, grapefruit or tangerines. Of course, you can mix the fruits together.

Very important and not to forget: The citrus fruit is only the base for our homemade lemonade. It does not replace all other fruits or ingredients that we can add in addition. So, for example, melon juice, ginger, mint, cucumber, vanilla, peach, elderberry, lavender, basil, raspberries or passion fruit.

Once you have these three ingredients, you really can't go wrong with homemade lemonade. If you want to be really good, you also always have ice cubes ready for your own lemonade. After all, lemonade has to be cold - and the colder it is, the more refreshing it is.

Steps to make lemonade yourself:

1. boil sugar syrup: (If you use ready-made sugar syrup or have already made the sugar syrup, you can skip this point). Boil water and add the sugar. Stir the water-sugar mixture constantly, letting it boil slightly. The syrup is ready when the liquid looks quite clear.

2. extract the fruit juice: After that, you need to juice the fresh fruit. For this, it's best to use a juicer or a citrus press. Pretty much any press you have at home will usually do. Also the citrus presses, which are increasingly used for mixing cocktails, are of course excellent.

Mix the juice and syrup: In the third step, you mix the sugar syrup with the fruit juice. The ratio of sweetness to acidity depends entirely on the lemonade and your own taste. You can work with the following rule of thumb:

Sugar syrup should make up at least 10% and no more than 30%. (This refers to homemade sugar syrup in a 1:1 ratio).

10% (so, for example, 100 ml in 1 liter total) is relatively little, but is quite enough if you are making, for example, an orange or tangerine limo, which are already quite sweet by themselves. 30% is again quite a lot, but it will do if you make, for example, a lemonade that contains 30-35% lemon juice alone. Here, of course, you need more sweetness than with other lemonades.

Pour in sparkling water: In the final step, you'll infuse the syrup-juice mixture with sparkling water. Every lemonade should contain at least one third mineral water. Depending on your taste and recipe, you can also serve your lemonade half with water and half with the syrup-juice mixture.

To serve the lemonade, it's best to first put ice cubes in a glass, then pour the juice with syrup over it and top up with sparkling water at the end.

Recipes for homemade lemonade:

As trite as it may sound, there are no limits to the recipe ideas for homemade lemonade. If you follow the three basic ingredients mentioned above for each lemonade, you can freely add new fruits, herbs and other flavorings.

Besides a simple version like lemon, orange, passion fruit, rhubarb, tangerine or grapefruit lemonade, you can always mix up to two ingredients. The only important thing is that you are curious to try this flavor combination yourself. Remember that lemon or lime juice should always be the base and not count towards the two additional ingredients.

Other recipes you can try include orange with dill, ginger with vanilla, watermelon with cucumber, cucumber and ginger, lemon and mint, lemon with rose, lemon and basil, watermelon with mint, mango with elderberry, peach with apple, raspberry with basil or elderberry with mint.
