Jalapeño Margarita
The jalapeño margarita is a modern interpretation of the classic margarita cocktail. Unlike the original, the jalapeño margarita is a more recent creation that has emerged from the trend of adding spice to cocktails.
Did you already know? The word "jalapeño" comes from the Spanish and means "from Xalapa". Xalapa is a city in Mexico that is known for its hot and spicy chili peppers. This is where the fiery chili variety gets its name from.
Determine the heat level of your cocktail yourself
The intensity of the spiciness can be adjusted individually. Some bartenders puree or muddle the jalapeño for a milder heat, while others shake it with the seeds and peel to create an extra kick.
Many jalapeño margaritas are served with a chili-salt rim to enhance the flavor. If the jalapeño heat in the drink is already enough for you, you can simply omit the chili powder and serve the cocktail with just a salt rim.

Jalapeño margarita recipe
Ingredients (for 2 portions):
- 12 cl tequila blanco
- 6 cl lime juice (freshly squeezed)
- 6 cl triple sec
- 3 cl agave syrup (if required)
- 1 jalapeño
- ice cubes
- Salt, chili powder (alternatively: chili salt)
- 2 lime slices or wedges
- 1 lime wedge
Preparation:
- Mix the salt and chili powder (1:1) and place on a plate.
- Moisten 2 margarita glasses with lime wedge. Dip the glasses in the chili-salt mixture.
- Cut the jalapeño into slices. Place 4-6 slices in a shaker and muddle. (For less heat: remove the seeds and peel)
- Add tequila, lime juice, triple sec and agave syrup.
- Add ice cubes and shake vigorously.
- Strain the cocktail into the prepared glasses
- Garnish each with a slice or wedge of lime.
Conclusion: The jalapeño margarita is a spicy and refreshing variation on the classic margarita and offers a delicious combination of spiciness and citrus fruits. Whether in a bar, at a Mexican-inspired party or as an accompaniment to spicy dishes, this cocktail will tantalize your taste buds and leave a lasting impression.
