Woodland - Sauerland Dry Gin:
Predominantly native botanicals, such as hand-picked sorrel, aromatic spruce tips, fresh nettles and strong dandelion root, give Woodland Sauerland Dry Gin its tangy, fresh taste. It is just as suitable as an aperitif as it is as a long drink with selected tonics or in cocktails.

Woodland is a genuine dry gin from the wooded low mountain range of the Sauerland. The predominantly native botanicals make up the unique taste of this Sauerland distillate. Spruce tips, tree fungus and dandelion root provide a woodsy, earthy aroma in the body note. A light top note of fresh nettle, hand-picked sorrel as well as citrus rounds off the taste tangy. The result is a tangy-fresh gin, distilled with our own fine-mild Sauerland spring water, which is just as suitable as an aperitif as it is as a long drink with selected tonics or in cocktails.

Our tip: As a gin and tonic mixed with a garnish of a slice of green apple and fresh mint.

Woodland Sauerland Dry Gin "The Navy Strength" combines our signature woodsy Sauerland aroma with distinct hints of Mediterranean citrusy notes and savory heartiness. These combine with the powerful alcohol content to create a high-intensity character that adds volume to cocktails and long drinks with its juiciness.

In the 18th century, the Royal Navy issued a commandment requiring every ship to carry a certain amount of gin on board. At that time, gin was considered a kind of panacea against any diseases at sea. After a while, however, the Navy began to feel that some of the distillers were stretching the gin with water to maximize their profits.

Gin and gunpowder were often stored below deck right next to each other. Because of this fact, some clever sailors devised a method to prove whether or not the gin was watered down. If they poured gin over the gunpowder and it still ignited, it was proven that the gin had its promised quality.

This method later became known as "navy strength proof." The gunpowder only ignited when the gin was bottled with an alcohol content of 57.15%.
