What exactly is Honest & Rare?

Honest & Rare is the online marketplace for craft beverages. We offer a central point of contact where special, high-quality and rare beverage specialties can be sold and purchased.

We achieve this by providing you, i.e. regional manufacturers and sellers of non-mainstream drinks, with a platform on which you can offer your products.

This not only gives you more visibility and reach in the online world, but above all reaches a national audience that appreciates your handiwork - and is also willing to pay a reasonable price for it.

Your advantages

  • No hidden costs: We work exclusively with a commission model. This means that you only pay us a fee when you actually sell something. You can find out more about this under Fees.
  • No contractual obligations: We know how important freedom, creativity and flexibility are for outstanding products. That's why you can come and go as you please. Without a minimum term, subscription traps or any other hassle!
  • Uncomplicated processing: You send the drinks you sell according to your usual principle, we won't talk you into it. After all, you know best how to get your products to your customers safely and quickly.
  • Your own online store for wine, whisky & co.: Your drinks not only end up on our category and recommendation pages, but we also create your own store on our site where only your drinks can be found.
  • Direct access to your own target group: With us, you are not just a category. Our customers come to our marketplace because they are looking for manufacturers like you. So you don't have to compete with the products of corporate giants, but have direct access to your target audience.
  • Benefit from marketing & networking activities: We love craft. That's why we want you to be able to concentrate fully on the production and development of your products. We take care of this for you with the Internet.
  • Comprehensive support: We help you create and maintain your product range and present your products in the best possible way. Free of charge. Because it's important to us that you can sell your drinks. And if you want, we can also help you to push your sales even further.

In 2023, we published our first Consumer Monitor Craft Beverage Report. Through our market survey, we wanted to better understand how people from the internet-savvy target group buy their drinks, what their preferences are and how often they enjoy and purchase them. You can find the most important results of the survey in the charts.

Honest & Rare in figures

  • 6,000 different drinks

Whether you are a winery, whisky importer, fruit distillery, beer brewer, coffee roaster or seller of regional specialties - our online marketplace is suitable for all producers and retailers who sell special drinks outside of the usual supermarket range. Regardless of whether you already sell your products in your own online store, are mainly listed in brick-and-mortar retail stores or are just looking to conquer the market - we are the right place for you to benefit from greater online visibility and reach for your brand and beverages.

And it's so easy! If you meet our product criteria, all you have to do is fill out our registration form and, after a brief check by us, you can get started straight away.

Our criteria

Our product promise is that our customers will only find drinks on Honest & Rare that do not conform to the (often boring) commercial standard - be it craft beer, gin, whisky, wine, coffee, lemonade or liqueur. All products must therefore meet the following criteria:

  • from genuine manufactories
  • not available everywhere (e.g. not to be found in supermarkets throughout Germany)
  • regionally anchored
  • only natural ingredients

Our marketplace fees

As already mentioned, we work exclusively with a commission model. So there are no hidden or trick costs - not even registration or product listing fees. You only pay us if you have actually sold drinks.

Our commission is 17.0% of the value of the goods excluding shipping costs and deposit. In contrast to other online marketplaces, we are well aware that shipping costs and deposits are not part of your turnover, but represent additional costs for you. We therefore leave them out.

The online payment fees for the payment providers are already included in the commission (between 1.5% and 2.5% depending on the payment method). Of course, we pass these on one-to-one.

The 17.0% commission is of course net.

Online marketplace instead of listing in the food retail trade (LEH)

As producers, you know that making a good product is just the beginning. If you want to make a living from your coffee roastery or gin distillery, you also need to be able to sell your products. For many, the first thing that comes to mind is the supermarket shelf. But this is where small businesses in particular are quickly brought back down to earth. The chance of making a profit with a listing in food retail often tends towards zero for manufacturers and small family businesses due to the high price and therefore cost pressure. This is because a listing in the retail trade comes with high costs - as well as the high margin requirements of the retailer based on the RRP.

Listing costs in the LEH

  • Listing fees (yes, actually. You first have to pay to be allowed to offer your products at Aldi, Lidl, Edeka & Co.)
  • Shelf rental (yes, even the physical space costs you a lot of money)
  • Flat rates & additional costs for advertising, discount campaigns & co.

What's more, if you can actually afford to get shelf space at Rewe or Kaufland, you are often not allowed to offer your products at any or only a few other stores.

Of course, you can also try to sell your drinks in small stores first, but that also means a lot of work and, above all, door-to-door canvassing. If you roast your coffee in Cologne, you will probably only rarely sell your products to Hamburg or Erding.

Advantages of the online marketplace for sellers

Fortunately, you don't have to rely solely on brick-and-mortar stores. There are far fewer hurdles to overcome to sell your drinks online - and you end up with more money in your pocket. Because instead of high listing fees and shelf rental, with us you only pay a commission of 17.0% per order - that's it. Whether you offer your entire range or certain special editions is entirely up to you, at no extra cost.

Online sales also give you the opportunity to sell your drinks nationwide. Thanks to the smart convenience of the Internet, you can serve your regular customers - and at the same time acquire new customers throughout Germany and abroad. So lower costs with higher sales opportunities at the same time. Sounds fantastic, doesn't it?

Online store vs. marketplace - pros & cons

Having your own online presence is essential for beverage companies today. So why not set up your own online store? What sounds like an uncomplicated banality has now become a real tour de force.

Although there are companies such as Shopify, Wix or Squarespace that offer customizable store solutions, these are usually quite expensive and setting up and maintaining the online store takes time and nerves. And above all, setting up your own online store is by no means the end of the story. If you really want to sell drinks, you also have to make sure that you can be found in the infinite vastness of the web.

Of course, there are agencies that can help you with your own web performance - but they usually charge so much for their work that it hardly justifies the effort for small beverage businesses. It is therefore only advisable for business owners to have their own online store if they have sufficient resources and an affinity for the Internet.

The situation is different with online marketplaces. This is because the operators of the marketplace, i.e. us, take over the further development and maintenance of the store and keep an eye on the performance and findability of the products. So you can concentrate fully on your production - we make sure that you can sell your drinks.

Selling drinks - rules & obligations

Selling beverages - this information is mandatory

Anyone who produces drinks and wants to make them available to potential customers must have a few basic details ready. These must be visible to buyers - both online and in retail outlets:

  • Content information (ingredients & additives, nutritional information, allergens - exception: spirits)
  • Designation or name of the food
  • Alcohol content (for alcoholic beverages)
  • Responsible food company
  • Net quantity of the beverage

Selling drinks online - what you need to bear in mind

If you want to sell your own drinks online, you must also provide a whole set of legal texts. These legal texts are mandatory for an online store:

  • General Terms and Conditions (GTC)
  • Imprint
  • Cancellation policy
  • Privacy policy

Fortunately, it is no longer necessary to employ a law firm for this, as there are now many good online generators that create secure legal texts for a small fee.

It should also be noted that a basic price must always be stated for drinks sold on the Internet. This refers to the price per liter - and must also be included in advertisements.
