Hazelnut liqueur: everything you need to know

1 A brief history: Hazelnut liqueur, also known as Frangelico, has a long and eventful history. Its origins are said to go back to the Christian monks of the northern Italian region of Piedmont, where they skillfully combined locally grown hazelnuts, cocoa, vanilla and other plant-based ingredients to create a liqueur - this is considered to be the origin of hazelnut liqueur as we know it today. The spirit was named after the hermit Fra Angelico, who lived in the Piedmont hills in the 17th century.

2nd production method: Hazelnut liqueur is usually made by soaking roasted hazelnuts in alcohol, which extracts their natural oils and flavors - this process is called "maceration". The resulting infusion is then mixed with other ingredients such as cocoa, vanilla and spices. Sometimes this is stored to achieve more balance in the drop. Finally, the liqueur is sweetened.

3. flavor profile: Hazelnut liqueur is known for its very rich, nutty taste. Hazelnuts are found in so many snacks and sweets anyway (just think of the chocolate shelf in the supermarket with Nutella and the like). The pronounced hazelnut flavors often blend with a hint of vanilla and the pleasant texture of a liqueur and become a real treat. The degree of sweetness varies from brand to brand and ranges from slightly sweet to richly sweet. You have to try them out until you find the perfect hazelnut liqueur for you.

4 Serving recommendations: Hazelnut liqueur can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, depending on personal preference. Here are some popular serving suggestions:

a. Neat or on the rocks: Simply enjoy neat at room temperature to fully appreciate its complex flavors. Alternatively, you can pour it over ice for a refreshing twist (definitely try it this way!).

b. Coffee enhancer: Add a splash of hazelnut liqueur to your coffee and discover the delicious flavor combination of coffee and hazelnut liqueur.

c. Cocktail ingredient: Hazelnut liqueur can be a versatile ingredient for cocktails. It combines well with a range of spirits such as vodka, rum and whisky, adding a nutty and creamy dimension to drinks.

d. Desserts: Hazelnut liqueur is almost unbeatable in desserts. Drizzle hazelnut liqueur over ice cream, pancakes or matching baked goods to enhance their flavor with a hint of delicious nuttiness and sweetness.
