At the beginning of the 20th century, the Frankfurt pharmacist Jacob M. Goldberg wanted to combat tropical diseases with his medicinal drinks. To pursue his goal, he emigrated to northern India, where his products soon met with the approval of the British colonial rulers. Tinctures once made for medicinal purposes became refreshing soft drinks; as a result, Jacob M. Goldberg redefined his business.
GOLDBERG BITTER LEMONADE IS BORN
Jacob M. Goldberg added carbonation to his beverages to create ready-to-drink lemonade products that could be enjoyed neat or mixed with spirits. Sailors in the British Royal Navy blended GOLDBERG lemonade with their favorite spirit, gin, creating a trendy drink that is still present on all good cocktail menus today.
