Tequila Slammer
The Tequila Slammer is not just a spirited drink, it's an experience. Originating from the heart of Mexico, this tequila-based concoction has been delighting taste buds for decades and its unique blend of drinking culture and fun ensures that it doesn't stop at just one drink.
The Tequila Slammer is not just about the taste, but also about the "slamming" ritual that precedes the drink. Immediately before the first sip, you cover the glass with your hand - and slam it back onto the bar with a flourish. This is not only a lot of fun, but also ensures that the flavors of the drink really get going.
The enthusiasm triggered by a tequila slammer is downright infectious. This makes it the perfect ice-breaker at parties, as it quickly turns strangers into friends. A fantastic choice for gatherings where the joy of toasting and sharing is paramount.
This sparkling cocktail is best served in a tall, slender highball glass and goes perfectly with Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine.
Tequila Slammer recipe
Ingredients (for 2 portions):
- 9 cl tequila (preferably reposado or añejo)
- 3 cl freshly squeezed lime juice
- 3 cl sugar syrup (to taste)
- Soda or lime or lemonade
Preparation:
- Fill two highball glasses 3/4 full with ice cubes.
- Pour in the tequila, lime juice & sugar syrup and stir gently.
- Top up with soda/lemonade so that there is at least a finger's breadth of air around the rim of the glass.

How do you drink the Tequila Slammer?
As soon as you have finished preparing the Tequila Slammer, place the palm of your hand well over the rim of the glass so that nothing can tip out. Lift the glass and slam it back onto the counter or table. This creates a lot of bubbles in the glass.
Now it's time to be quick: sip your Tequila Slammer before the carbon dioxide in the glass has calmed down again!
But you don't have to slam the cocktail down on the bar again before every sip. After the first "slam", you can enjoy it like a normal cocktail.
Which tequila for the Tequila Slammer?
The key to a good Tequila Slammer lies in the choice of tequila. Some opt for a Blanco or Silver Tequila, but often a milder and more mature Reposado or Añejo Tequila is preferred to balance the intense flavors of the other ingredients.
