Hardly any other brewery can offer its brews such grandiose storage conditions as Vulkan from the Eifel: its beer cellar is 30 meters deep

To make the most of this gift from the forces of nature, the brewery is working on a series of barrel-aged specialties These beers are specially designed for long storage periods and, once the brewing process is complete, are filled into wooden barrels where they mature to their full glory And because the barrels usually previously contained spirits or wine, there is a lot of flavor in the wood that is transferred to the brew during the maturation process

Part of this series, for example, is the Rum Barrel Barley Wine This strong beer was stored in rum barrels from Jamaica and, in addition to its impressive 11.5% alcohol content, brings a wealth of aromas to the glass Notes of tropical fruit are combined with fruity sweetness and hints of roasted coconut, raisins soaked in rum and creamy caramel to create a complex treat for the palate that goes wonderfully with hearty and richly sweet dishes Our favourite accompaniment is an oven-fresh brownie with a scoop of Malaga ice cream, a dollop of cream and a handful of chopped, caramelized nuts
