Mespilus germanica is the Latin name for the medlar. It belongs to the rose family and is therefore related to apples.
The resulting brandy is a rarity, as the medlar does not occur very often in nature. Its earthy, nutty taste with hints of pear and apple and a slight spiciness make it an exceptional brandy and a specialty for lovers of fruit brandies.
