Carbon dioxide in soft drinks, lemonade and sodas
Carbonated drinks, often commonly called sodas, are drunk by people all over the world for their fizziness and invigorating taste. We have carbon dioxide (CO2) to thank for this.
The magic of carbon dioxide: Carbon dioxide is the main gas responsible for the bubbles in sodas. During the carbonation process, the CO2 gas is introduced into the drink under pressure, causing tiny carbon dioxide bubbles to form. When a bottle or can is opened, these bubbles escape due to the sudden drop in pressure, creating the characteristic tingling and fizz - something that we humans and connoisseurs always associate positively.
Refreshing feeling: The fizz of carbonated drinks adds a unique touch to the whole drinking experience.
Why can "gas" in drinks like cola give a refreshing feeling?
1. sensory stimulation: the tingling sensation caused by the carbonation activates the sensory receptors on our tongue and provides a pleasant and refreshing feeling.
2. enhanced aroma: The carbonation enhances the aromas contained in the drink, intensifying the overall sensory experience. The combination of sparkling water and aroma can therefore be described as a multi-sensory pleasure.
3. cooling effect: The effervescence of carbonated drinks creates the illusion of a cooling effect through the rapid release of gas bubbles. This perception can be particularly pleasant on hot summer days.
Why is carbonation in drinks so important?
1. essential for taste and association: Carbon dioxide in drinks has become an absolute must in some cases. Just imagine a stale pilsner or a stale cola that comes completely without carbonation. Carbonation in some soft drinks through to bitter lemonades such as tonic water or beer has become a must for the taste experience and the overall association with the drinks.
2. wide range of flavors: Carbonated drinks come in a variety of flavors, from traditional cola and lemon or orange to exotic fruit blends and root beer. You only have to stroll along a supermarket drinks shelf to see how many drinks are actually made with carbon dioxide. In addition to beer, sparkling wine and mineral water, for example.
3. versatile mixing options: Carbonated drinks make versatile mixers and fillers for cocktails and mocktails, adding a tangy touch to many drinks and making them indispensable. For example, for a spritz, a wine spritzer, lemonade spritzer or gin and tonic thanks to the essential tonic water.
