No 255 Reichenauer snake cucumber - spirit

Salad cucumber or gherkin? That was the question here! When we are faced with such a question, we go about it the right way. Of course, it was obvious to produce our gherkin spirit with the famous gherkins from the nearby Spreewald. But our blind tastings as part of our systematic product development ultimately gave the odor and taste preference to the snake gherkin. And if snake cucumbers are to be used, then they should come from the place where they grow best in Germany and have a long tradition, from the island of Reichenau in Lake Constance, of course in organic quality.

Botanically speaking, the cucumber is a fruit ("armored berry"), but in terms of flavors it is handled like a vegetable, being served not as a dessert but as a hearty main course, for example as a salad. For this reason, it is also assigned to the cultural group of fruit vegetables.

The aldehydes (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal and (E)-2-nonenal are responsible for the typical cucumber aroma. They provide the cornerstone for this truly refreshing spirit, which makes you smell the summer freshness at any time of the year and can be enjoyed pure or used for cooking or mixing. By the way, the bitter substances sometimes present in cucumbers are mainly triterpene glycosides, so-called cucurbitacins. But do not worry: since these bitter substances are not volatile, they cannot be present in our spirit.
