More information about Frank John

Frank John, Hirschhorner Weinkontor, is primarily known and recognized for its white wines and sparkling wines from traditional bottle fermentation. With the Pinot Noir 2020, Frank John underlines his deep understanding of the grape variety and how to vinify it into a truly great red wine.

The grapes for the Pinot Noir come exclusively from Palatinate vineyards with a high lime content. The grapes are fermented on the skins in the traditional way. This is followed by malolactic fermentation. The Pinot is aged and matured for up to two years in 225 l and 500 l barrels. Only then is it bottled unfiltered. The result is a clear, spicy, multi-faceted Pinot Noir with depth.

The nose is dominated by bright red fruits of sour cherry, raspberry and white currant. This is accompanied by spicy and smoky notes. The supporting minerality announces itself with a gentle tingle on the nose. All facets can be found on the palate, accompanied by a fine, subtle acidity in the background. The perfect tannins give the wine structure and allow a lining mouthfeel, while the Pinot Noir has a pleasant drinking flow.

The Pinot Noir Kalkstein 2020 can be enjoyed on its own and yet it is ideal as a food companion for an ossobuco or - why not? - a classic Palatinate Saumagen with roasted potatoes.
