Gin Fizz: The classic recipe and three delicious variations

Gin Fizz: Das klassische Rezept und drei leckere Varianten
Classic Gin Fizz and three delicious variations

Along with gin and tonic, gin fizz is one of the classics among gin cocktails. All you need is fresh lemon juice and sugar syrup, and you've got (almost) an incredibly refreshing fruity and tart drink that's a quick treat not only for yourself, but also for guests.

We show you the classic Gin Fizz recipe and three variations.

Gin Fizz: Das beste und einfachste Rezept
The best and easiest gin fizz

Gin Fizz: The best and easiest recipe

As easy as the classic Gin Fizz recipe looks, it's just as easy to make. Of course, if you don't have fresh lemon, you can use concentrate for once. You can easily boil sugar syrup on its own. If you don't have a shaker, just mix all the ingredients directly in the glass - so you have a Tom Collins.

Ingredients for the Gin Fizz:

  • 5cl gin
  • 3cl freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1cl sugar syrup
  • 8cl mineral water
  • Lots of ice cubes

Here's how you make it:

  1. Add gin, lemon juice, sugar syrup and ice cubes to shaker and shake well and vigorously
  2. Strain into a glass filled with ice cubes (using your shaker's strainer or a fine kitchen strainer)
  3. Top off the cocktail with sparkling mineral water

The art of the mix:

As with any cocktail, the ratios of ingredients in the recipe matter. Here are two simple tips on how to tune your fizz without tweaking the amount of gin or lemon juice:

  • If you like it a little sweeter, use 1.5cl or 2cl of sugar syrup
  • If you find the drink too strong overall (too much alcohol, too sweet, too sour), just extend it with more mineral water. You can dilute any fizz, no matter how strong, with water until you find the perfect balance.

Our recommendation for the classic Gin Fizz:

alwa® mettermalt® Gin: This gin from the Black Forest is mild, fine, herbal, fruity and has a good citrus note. Blackberry leaves and lemon thyme give it the fruity, citrusy aroma. Nevertheless, as a London Dry Gin, it has a clear juniper note that goes super with our recipe. order alwa® mettermalt® Gin

Der Samtig-weiche: Gin Fizz mit Eiweiß
Gin fizz with egg white

The velvety smooth: Gin fizz with egg white

If you want to add a little more velvety-smooth creaminess to your drink, then make yourself a Silver Fizz. Many connoisseurs swear by the egg white in cocktails like this one or Whisky Sour.

Simply add an egg white to the shaker. For this gin fizz variant, you should mix particularly thoroughly so that the egg white combines with all the other ingredients.

Our recommendation for the gin fizz with egg white:

Marder g in: Marder gin is clear, clean and fresh. Thanks to botanicals such as bergamot, lavender and angelica root, it also has a slightly floral component and notes of licorice in its aroma. This makes it even more exciting for our velvety-soft gin fizz with egg white. Order Marder Gin

Der Edele: Royal Gin Fizz
With champagne: Royal Gin Fizz

The noble one: Royal Gin Fizz

What royal drinks water? Of course, this is where champagne comes into play. To top up at the end of the recipe, simply use champagne instead of mineral water. You've already got a cool version of the legendary cocktail.

Our recommendation for the Royal Gin Fizz:

Goldwood Gin - Golden Leaves: As a royal, you naturally surround yourself with gold wherever possible. So nothing goes better with the Royal Gin Fizz than our dry gin with 23-carat edible gold flakes. The taste is full of fresh citrus aromas, orange blossom and a cinnamon aftertaste. Ruby Fizz
With Sloe Gin: Ruby Fizz

The fruity one: Ruby Fizz

Ruby Fizz is also called Sloe Gin Fizz. Here you add half normal gin and half sloe gin to the glass. This not only gives your drink a funky color. The sloe gin also brings in a delicious fruitiness, which harmonizes perfectly with the acidity.

Our recommendation for the Ruby Fizz:

Windspiel Sloe Gin: The Sloe Gin from Windspiel is an absolute classic among sloe gins. With aromatic sloe and delicious floral citrus notes, it tastes great not only neat and as a gin and tonic, but also as a Ruby Fizz. Order Windspiel Sloe Gin

What's so special about Gin Fizz?

Gin Fizz has become a legendary cocktail because it's easy to make and brings together two flavors that most people like: tartness and sweetness. These flavors paired with a delicious juniper schnapps always make for a flavorful spectacle.

Plus, shaking it gives us a nice head of foam in the glass. Not only does this make for a pleasant drinking experience, but it also looks quite strong. The lemon yellow, slightly cloudy color of the cocktail matches this. To get the most out of the Gin Fizz, it's best served in a highball glass.

What is the difference between Gin Fizz, Gin Sour and Tom Collins?

The Gin Fizz recipe is very similar to the Gin Sour and Tom Collins. The difference with the Sour is that it is served without soda and ice cubes, making it stronger. The difference from the Tom Collins to the Fizz is that it is stirred in the glass and not shaken in the shaker.

Which gins are suitable for Gin Fizz?

It always depends strongly on your own taste, because of course many gins are suitable for Gin Fizz. The special thing about a simple cocktail is rather to try different types of gin and discover the variety of results.

Nevertheless, classic Dry Gins or London Dry Gins with a pronounced juniper note and pleasant citrus aroma are best suited. You would pretty much always get one of these in a good bar.

Still, we want to give you three options so you have variety and can go on your own journey of discovery:

  1. Citrus-heavy gins: the flavors of strongly citrus-oriented gins naturally harmonize wonderfully with the acidity of a fizz
  2. Juniper-heavy gins: fizzes with gins that have a strong juniper aroma are particularly exciting. If the aroma is strong enough and this spreads out alongside the sourness of the sours, it makes for a very tasty flavor combination
  3. Fruity gins: lemon goes well with many other fruit flavors, of course. Feel free to try your next gin fizz recipe with a fruity gin to add more complexity to your drink. Two things to keep in mind: If the acidity of the lemon is too strong, it can completely overpower the other fruit flavors (of course, the gin may also be too weak). Also, "fruity" is a broad term. Not every fruit body will blend perfectly with the citric acidity and sweetness of a fizz.
