Pusser's Rum is the only authentic and original rum of the Royal Navy, created according to the specifications of the British Navy. Beginning in the 17th century, the Royal Navy issued daily rum rations on board ships, known as "tot". The sailor responsible for dispensing the daily rum ration was called a "purser" by the sailors, more colloquially known as a "pusser."
The pusser was often suspected of watering down the precious rum. To prove otherwise, he mixed a few grains of gunpowder into the rum and tried to ignite it. If the rum ignited, it was considered "at proof."

Pusser's Rum
The history of rum in the Royal Navy was largely one of social change, both in Britain and in the Royal Navy. From 1650 to the 18th century, life on board was incredibly difficult.
