A count, a castle, a broom: The legend of Roshain

Once upon a time, a count of lower nobility lived in Rosenau Castle in the Siebengebirge on the Rhine. He was truly no role model in matters of manners and education. At least he knew that. And he knew how to help himself: He wanted to take the beautiful maiden Roshain as his wife, who would inherit a valuable treasure. But Roshain had a strong character. She rebuffed him. So the count once again lived up to his bad reputation and kidnapped the young beauty to Rosenau Castle. He treated Roshain very badly, hoping to break her will. If she became his wife, he could get hold of her valuable treasure.

She remained strong and steadfast - even when the count chased her with a broom to the door for sweeping in winter. Then the count lost his temper and shouted at her, "Go rot in the ground!" Immediately it became dark and silent around the castle. A rumble was heard, then the earth cracked open under Roshain and the young woman fell into the dark abyss. "Fly out again on your broom," the Count of Rosenau called after her with a sneer.

Roshain awoke deep under the Siebengebirge in a dark stone cave. She was hurt and wept bitterly. But then a fairy appeared to her and spoke to her courage: "Fly out on your broom and turn a round around the castle and you will see: no count of the Rosenau will ever find peace here again!"

Meanwhile, the Count stood laughing and bawling with a few beer-swilling drinking buddies. Suddenly he heard a soft hissing above him - and was startled: the Maiden of the Rosenau had just not rotted under the ground but was flying through the air on a broom. Roshain landed directly in front of the count. He was trembling all over. She looked him in the eye, adjusted her thin dress and breathed into his ear: "Do you still want to marry me? The count did not make a sound. Then Roshain took the broom as if she wanted to sweep the ground in front of his feet - and immediately the count was seized by a mighty gust of wind and hurled deep into the forest. He was never seen again at Rosenau Castle. Roshain had shown her mystical character for the last time: gentle, sensual, strong.

The next counts of Rosenau were not happy either. When the last Count von der Rosenau died, his family immediately sold the castle. Today the castle is no more than a ruin.
