Beer style: Russian Imperial Stout with Brettanomyces
Critters Went Berserk is an outstanding barrel-aged Imperial Stout that impresses with its intense aromas and depth. With an alcohol content of 10.0 %, this beer is a real treat for anyone who appreciates strong, full-bodied brews.
The aroma palette of this sensual brew is rich and varied: woody notes, dark fruits, roasted aromas, cocoa and liquorice are a delight to the senses. The taste is a successful harmony of hot chocolate, freshly brewed coffee, red dried fruit, vanilla, oak and warming hints of bourbon. The secret of this complex beer lies in its production. The basis is a strong Imperial Stout, which has been refined by maturing in wooden barrels. The specialty beer was stored in the barrels for a whole year. During this process, the Imperial Stout was able to deepen its characteristic taste and complement it with the rich aromas of the wooden barrel. The subtle acidity in the beer comes from the use of the Brettanomyces yeast strain, which adds an extra dimension to the stout.
We assume that the freaky creatures in the title refer to this special yeast fungus. The exotic culture is simply called Brett in brewing jargon and occurs naturally on the skin of fruit. In the case of Critters Went Berserk, the yeast was used in generous quantities and allowed to run wild.
