More information about Alto de la Ballena Reserva Tannat Viognier 2015
Our most exciting cuvée with two very different grape varieties: the wild tannins of the Tannat and the elegant aromas of the Viognier are a surprising play of opposites. Deep purple color.
Ripe red fruits with traces of wild flowers, exotic spices, some vanilla and coconut. Juicy fruit and velvety on the palate, with pleasant tannins. A noble and unique cuvée for very special occasions.
The vines were managed very carefully and with a very low yield, achieving an excellent concentration of grapes. Each variety was hand harvested at its best ripening point, in small 15 kilo boxes.
The Viognier was fermented in new French oak barrels. After two days of cold maceration, the Tannat was fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature. After blending, the wine was aged for nine months in new American and French oak barrels. To preserve its qualities, it was lightly filtered and bottled without stabilization.

Alto de la Ballena
In 1998, Paula Pivel and Alvaro Lorenzo founded a small winery in the department of Maldonado, in the southeastern region of Uruguay. They just knew that they liked good wines and now they were looking for an appealing place in a good location where they could plant wine, that had beautiful landscapes and was well located. It took several months of intensive search until they were able to acquire almost twenty hectares in the Sierra de la Ballena - a few kilometers from the sea and from Punta del Este, the most beautiful seaside resort in the country. Meanwhile, Alto de la Ballena wines are in demand not only international specialty stores, but also in gourmet restaurants and the best Restauraunts in Uruguay.
