The fine wine from Portugal: Port wine

Port wine, also known as Vinho do Porto, is a sweet, full-bodied wine from the Douro Valley in Portugal. It is often enjoyed as a dessert wine and impresses with its intense aromas and the rich history of its production.

The history of port wine

The history of port wine dates back to the 17th century. English merchants began to import wine from Portugal. To preserve the wine during the long transportation, brandy was added to it. This method led to the creation of today's port wine. As early as 1756, the Douro Valley was recognized as a protected wine-growing region, which further strengthened the quality and authenticity of port wine. The tradition of port wine production has been passed down through generations and is still practiced today.

Port wine experienced a heyday in the 19th century, when it became increasingly popular in England and around the world. Today, port wine is a symbol of Portuguese wine culture and an important export. The large port wine houses in Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia store and mature the wines in large cellars, where they find the ideal conditions for the development of their complex aromas.

Port wine production process

Port wine is made from a variety of grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. After fermentation, the wine is brought to an alcohol content of around 20% by adding brandy, which stops the fermentation and preserves the natural sugar. The wine is then matured in oak barrels before being bottled.

There are different types of port wine, including Ruby, Tawny and Vintage. Ruby Port is young and fruity, while Tawny Port matures longer in oak barrels and develops complex aromas of nuts and dried fruit. Vintage Port is made from the grapes of a single vintage and is considered to be of particularly high quality.

Types of port wine

  • Ruby Port - Ruby Port is the most commonly consumed port wine. It is bottled young and retains its strong red color and fruity aromas. It usually only matures for a short time in large oak barrels.
  • Tawny Port - Tawny Port matures for longer periods in small oak barrels, which gives it its characteristic amber color and complex aromas of nuts, caramel and dried fruit. It can mature for between 10 and 40 years.
  • Vintage Port - Vintage Port is a premium port wine that is only produced in particularly good vintages. It matures for two to three years in oak barrels and then for many years in the bottle. Vintage Port is rich and complex and can be stored for decades.
  • Late Bottled Vintage (LBV - LBV Port is a variation of Vintage Port, but is matured longer in barrels and bottled ready to drink. It offers a cheaper alternative to the classic Vintage Port without sacrificing quality.

The home of port wine

The Douro Valley, the home of port wine, is one of the oldest protected wine regions in the world. The steep, terraced vineyards and the unique microclimate contribute to the high quality of the wines. The traditional methods of winemaking are still practiced here today, making port wine an authentic product.
