Showman & confectioner with heart and soul - a portrait of Mother Veldkamp
Colorful lights, exuberant people leisurely making their way through the makeshift alleyways, rides whizzing by and the smell of sweet almonds and candy floss - fairgrounds are a very special place. Tom Veldkamp thinks so too. No wonder, as he belongs to one of Hamburg's oldest fairground families.
Buying Hamburg golden almonds from Mother Veldkamp
Together with his best friend from childhood, Frank Dörksen, who also comes from a family of showmen, he runs Mutter Veldkamp GmbH & Co. KG, which is known around Hamburg for its fine roasted nuts and kernels.
The name is a tribute to the matriarch of the Veldkamp family, who came to Hamburg from the Netherlands in the 19th century and opened a stately café on Heiliggeistfeld. However, most people in Hamburg knew the businesswoman primarily for her charity, which is why she was known everywhere as Mother Veldkamp. Every year, Anna Wilhelmine Veldkamp invited the city's orphans to her home for the Winter Cathedral and treated them to lard cookies and hot chocolate - as well as handing out small gifts of money.

Tom Veldkamp continues his family's legacy together with his best friend Frank Dörksen (not pictured) and other family members.
Over time, the café had to give way and the Veldkamp family also had to say goodbye to homemade cakes - the widespread flour dust allergy among bakers did not spare them. However, the descendants of Anna Wilhelmine have inherited their sense of tradition and entrepreneurship and have remained true to the confectionery business - and can still be found on the Heiliggeistfeld at Hamburg Cathedral.
In the beginning, Bio-Nuss Manufaktur Veldkamp traveled from fair to fair with a small kiln car in the background of the actual business, but today they have a stationary factory just outside Hamburg. There, the highest quality organic nuts and kernels are distilled and refined, either from Spain, Central America or Asia. The old family recipes are used to create timeless classics that are given a new freshness with modern ingredients.
"The culture & community of the showmen has shaped us"
The traditional roasted almonds, for example, are enhanced with 22-carat gold leaf, turning them into Hamburg's popular golden almonds, which have made a name for themselves far beyond the city's borders. Sesame, ginger and cardamom have also found their way into the copper kettles and add the finishing touches to almonds, cashews, peanuts and brazil nuts.

The roasted organic nuts and kernels are refined with the best ingredients in Mother Veldkamp's factory.
Even though Tom Veldkamp and Frank Dörksen now have an additional solid base from which to bring their confectionery to the world, the two are still showmen with heart and soul. "We were born into the showmen's culture and community. That shapes us," says Tom Veldkamp. "Our parents showed us that you can make the most of the openness and freedom of this unique trade if you approach it with diligence, ambition, brains and, above all, passion. The life of showmen is characterized by an open-minded approach to one another. And that's something we simply wouldn't want to do without in our lives."
So if you want to take these delicacies home with you, you can try the fine roasted
nuts and kernels from Mother Veldkamp - Tom Veldkamp even has a secret tip for this.
Veldkamp even has an insider tip: "If you want to enjoy the roasted nuts just as nice and warm from the bag at home, simply place them on the radiator for a few minutes. Turn them a few times and you've got that fairground feeling on the sofa."
