"Molienda manual con mazo" means that all agaves were processed completely by hand with a wooden hammer to separate them from the fibers. So no mill or other equipment used in this first step of production by master distiller Margarito Cortès. This method of production "Molienda manual con mazo" is already 300 years old. As the name suggests, Barril is the agave variety.

This elaborate form of agave preparation may also explain (?) that the bottling is only 30 liters.

About the agave variety Barril

Barril is a wild agave and can mature between 15 and 20 years. It belongs to the so-called Karwinskii family, which also includes the Madre-Cuishe (or simply Cuishe) agave variety and is used far more often in mezcal. Barril grows in tall, barrel-like stems that can also be used as a protective fence on farms or between farms.

The mezcal bottlings that go under this name are not infrequently bottlings of a few hundred liters. Because of the small quantity and the high focus on quality, all Mezcals from Mezcalosfera are true masterpieces. In the production of Mezcal, each Maestro Mezcalero brings his own flavor of his region to the final product. Thus, the distillates are not only rare, but all have a strong individual note, which is marked by their origin.
