Steamworks Brewing Co.

Steamworks Brewing Co.

When their grandfather moved from Austria to Canada in the 1930s and his sister stayed behind in Vienna, they had no idea that their two grandsons would one day enter the beer business. It took another two generations before the Austrian-Canadian musical family sprouted a brewer: Eli, who discovered a love of beer during his trip to Europe and learned the brewing trade without further ado, bought the Gastown Brewpub. The venerable building housed a real treasure: a steam heating system. The technique of steam brewing dates back to pioneer days and was rarely practiced by the end of the 20th century. Eli showed a spirit of discovery and revived a long-forgotten tradition. Canada's first steam brewery was born and brewing could begin!

From Canada to Austria

Not wanting to add steam to the Canadian beer scene, but also a breath of fresh air, Eli made regular trips to the homeland of his ancestors. Following in his grandfather's footsteps, he came across more beer recipes as well as his cousin Herbert. An intimate friendship developed that didn't mind the many miles between Salzburg and Vancouver, so no one was surprised when the two cousins decided to become business partners. Beer unites, and this is also true for Herbert and Eli. With good humor and drive, the two expanded the Canadian brewery's sphere of activity to European territory and have since been distributing not only classics like their Pale Ale but also unusual creations like the Killer Cucumber Ale (David Hertl is not the only one who dares to turn cucumbers into beer) or their Jasmine IPA, which is brewed with aromatic jasmine flowers. The beers from Steamworks Brewing are not only enjoyed by connoisseurs on two continents, they have also convinced the juries of numerous competitions. With excellent recipes, hand-picked ingredients and excellent quality, beers are created that inspire.

Born in Vancouver, brewed in Berlin

After a few years, sales were so high that the small Vancouver steam brewery was bursting at the seams. The Steamworks Brewpub could no longer meet the high demand, so a second brewery was built in Burnaby. In the adjoining tap room, visitors can taste the wide range of beers in a cozy atmosphere and see for themselves the passion behind this company. To avoid long transport routes, the production of beers for the European market was moved to the CraftZentrum in Berlin. Here, strictly selected ingredients and the fine Austrian-Canadian recipes are used to brew beers that have the original taste, but are much better for the ecological conscience. Clever!
