White Russian
The White Russian is probably the most famous after-dinner cocktail. The drink gained its popularity through its appearance in the cult classic "The Big Lebowski", in which the main character, The Dude, orders it throughout the movie.
However, it first became popular in the 1960s when cream-based cocktails became fashionable and bartenders experimented with different combinations of spirits, liqueurs and mixers.
The exact origins of the White Russian are unclear, but it is thought to be a variation of the Black Russian. This is also prepared with vodka and coffee liqueur, but without cream.
White Russian recipe
Ingredients (for 2 portions):
Preparation:
- Pour the vodka and coffee liqueur into a shaker filled with ice cubes.
- Shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker freezes.
- Pour ice cubes into two chilled martini or tumbler glasses and strain the drink over them.
- Float with cream.

Some variations of the drink include using different types of cream, or a 50/50 mix with milk. If you like, you can also garnish the White Russian with vanilla or cinnamon.
What does the White Russian taste like?
Despite the cream it contains, the White Russian tastes surprisingly light. Its fresh creaminess is perfect after every meal or on a cozy evening.
