Grog
Grog is a drink with a centuries-old tradition that is still very popular today. It is made from a mixture of hot water, rum and a pinch of sugar. The result is a delicious and warming drink that is perfect to enjoy on cold nights.
Grog recipe
Ingredients (for 2 portions):
- 6 cl dark rum
- 6 cl boiling water
- 4 tsp sugar
Preparation:
- Pour half rum and half sugar into a glass or cup.
- Add boiling water and stir until the sugar has dissolved.

To give the classic grog a little freshness, you can also add a dash of lime or lemon juice!
Interesting facts about grog
Grog was originally drunk by British sailors around 1700, who mixed their daily rum ration with water, sugar and spices. The drink was served hot, as it was believed to protect against scurvy and other illnesses. Grog is also said to alleviate cold and flu symptoms, sore throats and stomach upsets and help with insomnia and anxiety.
Incidentally, the name "grog" is said to go back to the nickname of Admiral Edward Vernon, who ordered the rum to be diluted so that supplies could be used more sparingly.
Grog is still an extremely popular drink in the Caribbean and is sometimes served with spices such as cinnamon, cloves and allspice. Grog is also still popular in parts of Europe and is sometimes made with red wine or brandy instead of rum. In this country, however, grog is mainly enjoyed in winter.
