Hurricane

The Hurricane cocktail is a refreshing and tropical drink that originated in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the 1940s. It is perfect for a hot summer's day and tropical flair.

Hurricane cocktail recipe

Ingredients (for 2 servings):

• 6 cl brown rum
• 6 cl white rum
• 6 cl passion fruit juice
• 6 cl orange juice
• 3 cl grenadine syrup
• 3 cl lemon juice
• ice cubes
• Orange slice

Preparation:

1. Place the ice cubes in a shaker.
2. Add all the liquid ingredients and shake vigorously for approx. 10-15 seconds.
3. Strain the contents through a bar strainer into two hurricane or long drink glasses.
4. Garnish each with a slice of orange.

The history of the Hurricane cocktail

Its history can be traced back to the Second World War. Back then, certain types of alcohol were in short supply and bar owners had to get creative when designing their cocktail menus. The Hurricane was born out of necessity to use up the quantities of rum that were readily available at the time.

The name "Hurricane" comes from the shape of the glass in which the drink is traditionally served. This glass, specially designed for the cocktail, is reminiscent of a hurricane lamp.

The foundation stone for the popularity of the Hurricane cocktail was laid in Pat O'Brien's bar in New Orleans. The bar often gave away the glasses in which the drink was served, which helped spread the Hurricane across the country.

The Hurricane is also a popular drink during Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans. Mardi Gras takes place every year in New Orleans and is similar - at least in theory - to the European Mardi Gras.
